Why Mika Zibanejad Should be on Your Sleeper Radar

September 10, 2017 at 11:07 am

Mika last year had a devastating injury that held him out for most part of the year. Prior to the injury his point total grew every single year while with Ottawa. Given the “lack” of production in 2017 given only 56 GP (37 PTS… .66 PPG) he is now in a very unique situation.

For the first time in his career he will be the #1 Center on the teams depth chart. The NYR traded Stepan which by default moves Mika up the top line. When you look at the ADP for #1 centers across the NHL he is near the bottom. You can literally get a guy who can be 18-21 min. TOI with PP time in the 13-14 round area.

He’s only 24 years old and was a top 10 pick in 2011.

The only real risk here is that most people believe the Rangers are going to look to add center depth at some point of the year. There really is no guarantee he maintains the #1 C job for the entire season. But at such a late round pick there is a growing ceiling for a young player/once top prospect with very little risk.

He just signed a 5 year deal this summer. If heavy NYR summer signings have taught us anything, its realisitc to think its okay to stay away.

He barely makes the top 50 center rankings among most fantasy analysts. Unless you love him/think he is a legit sleeper he on the cusp of not even being drafted in some leagues.

One thing I do like about him that is promising is that his face off percentage and shooting percentage is up each year, nice to find those guys who can win your specific categories each week and Mika is becoming one of those guys.

center is just so deep. Sounds like a solid sleeper but when you look at the difference of value of other potential sleepers I like to go for the harder to find positions like wing for goalie. Still, very solid points you make.
