The Case for Casey DeSmith

January 24, 2018 at 12:47 pm

When Matt Murray left Pittsburgh (personal reasons) many presumed (myself included) that Tristan Jarry would take over the Penguin net once again. Surprisingly enough, that has not been the case as Casey DeSmith has played his way into the #1 role ahead of Jarry with his recent play.

So, you may be wondering, is DeSmith reliable enough and is he worth a pickup?

The short answer is…yes.

DeSmith is now 2-2 with a 1.86 GAA and .935 SV %. Over the last two weeks as he has increased his role, he is ranked as a top 40 fantasy player. Of course, playing in front of a star-packed offense like Pitt is a great perk, but with his minimal GP he is well ahead of both goalies in major statistical efficiency categories. Of course, that would be expected to slightly change as he gets more games under his belt.

Murray returns to practice this week, the first time since his father passed away. There is still no timetable for his return, but given his absence was personal and not due to injury, it’s expected he returns in the next 1-2 weeks. However; DeSmith has made it easier for Pittsburgh to let Murray gradually return as needed, which implies DeSmith has incredible short-term fantasy value over the next 1-2 weeks as we head in the ASG weekend. We should expect a few more starts from him until Murray 100% returns. For those who need goalie help, he is the hot hand to ride right now.

Pitt only has 1 more game till the all star break. Wouldn’t be surprised if DeSmith gets the start, and Murray takes back the job when play resumes.
