Shohei Ohtani the Batter

April 9, 2018 at 8:51 am

Shohei Ohtani was awful this Spring. Boy how things have changed. After week 1 of fantasy baseball, the Asian phenom has 3 HR, 7 RBI, .389 AVG, .889 SLG and 1.310 OPS. Not to mention “the pitcher” is 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA.

So, the inevitable questions are:

1) Is he incredibly streaky?
2) Is he for real?
3) Will one “side” (Pitcher vs. Hitter) overtake the other, and the Angels favor one side more than the other in terms of starts, AB opportunities etc.

One could make the argument if he continues to put up huge power numbers and pitching stats start to struggle, the Angels can minimize his starts to ensure it does not interrupt his offensive surge. Vice versa thought process with pitching as well. It’s as unknown and unique for this era of baseball.

The Batter version is now owned in 77% of Yahoo leagues, (+6% yesterday), and is a few weeks away from (probably) being owned in 100% of leagues. So, in short bench leagues, where every spot counts, you may be wondering if the risk is worth the reward to pick up the rookie.

The quick answer: Yes.

What we know now:

1) He will receive limited ABs before/after games he starts, so it will have a big impact on his week-long fantasy value. He is a “plug-in” play throughout the week, and not somebody who you can just keep in your util spot.
2) Measure his true value measuring ABs vs. potential FAs. His numbers will proportionally seem lower throughout the year with limited games and ABs, but don’t let that foot you when evaluating ABs vs. HR/RBI proportionally speaking. Overall numbers may have others avoid him. Take advantage of their mistakes.
3) If/when moved near to the top of the lineup around Trout/Pujols etc. it’s expected his numbers can only go up. There is a lot more upside than other potential FA pickups right now.

Forget the spring – he’s just living up to original expectations. That ST just brought down his fantasy value big time heading into drafts.
