Keep an eye on Seth Lugo

February 5, 2018 at 10:19 am

New York Mets’ Starting Pitcher Seth Lugo is entering his 3rd season in Major League Baseball. After going through the “Sophomore Slump” in 2017, there are ambiguous expectations coming into the season for the 28-year old.

When healthy, the Mets are expected to have one of the best rotations in baseball. **When healthy**. Lugo is expected to be the 4/5 behind stars like Syndergaard, deGrom, and Harvey and will be at the rear of the rotation with Wheeler. Given what we have seen in the past with the Mets’ health issues, there shouldn’t be any concerns for those who think he will not be a top 5 guy in the rotation at points during the 2018 campaign.

Lugo is a deep sleeper who won’t be drafted in most 10 and 12-man leagues. He is realistically a later round pick/sleeper pick, or a FA you keep an eye. The Mets were depleted with injuries last year (which is no excuse for poor performance), but did make a big impact playing alongside a AAA quality team for most of last season.

His ERA fell from 2.67 to 4.70 YoY, however; he played through a gruesome UCL tear last season. He followed that injury with a shoulder problem. When healthy (in 2016) he managed a 7-5 record, 2.67 ERA, and 45K in 64 IP. Great numbers for a rookie. An injury played year for a young player shouldn’t scare you away. When you are in the 18-19-20+th rounds of your fantasy draft, you should target high ceiling picks. There is minimal risk, and Lugo should be a name to keep in mind.

Deep pick is an underestimate, but that’s why they call em sleepers. Robbie Ray 2.0?

With Gsellman and Matz they have too many SPs, could be traded, i’m hearing mixed things about his opening day status.

After that Todd Frazier deal im even starting to like the mets more. Great for Lugo and getting the run support that pitching staff desperately needs.

Cespedse, Frazier, Conforto, Bruce, Gonzalez, and some young top prospects, not a terrible lineup.

Sounds like Wheeler and Matz are the 4/5 for NYM? unless they are going 6 man rotation?
