javier baez is next years big breakout player

September 9, 2017 at 5:01 pm

i thought this year could be the year baez has his full breakout. although its been a pretty strong year for him (20+ hr 60+ rbi .260+ avg) it wasn’t nearly enough to be a breakout, but another valid reason to expect him to be on the verge of a big breakout in 2018.

always a good starting point when his production increases YoY (when healthy). he’ll be hitting his mid 20s and will be his 3rd full (5th overall) season in the bigs with plenty of staring experience.

the biggest thing holding him back right now that he is consistently in the bottom 3 of the batting order. based on any off season moves it would change everything if he could get in the 2nd spot or 5-6 to say the least. if he moves up in the batting order baez is a MUST target when prepping for next season, or worth a pick up now in a keeper league if he for whatever reason is available.

he was a big reason for puerto rico having such big success in the world baseball classic and was a great sign to show what he can do given more opportunities.

for years he was the cubs #1 prospect in a loaded farm system, his time to be an all-star is just around the corner….

Middle infielders have gotten more deep in fantasy the past few years than arguably ever before. Love that on Yahoo is eligible for 2B, 3B, and SS. Could easily be a guy many want to reach for next year as a utility guy in the 10-12 round range.

He’ll need to work on his OBP and SLG and get on base more if he wants to:

1) Be in the top 6 of the order
2) Be a legit sleeper candidate for 2018

I think its very realistic. Over the past month his AVG, OPS etc. has all been above his full season average. Very promising to see that type of growth/development throughout the season. Encouraging as many of us start looking ahead in our “too early fantasy rankings.”

espn currently has him ranked #9 2B in dynasty baseball leagues. just another reminder how deep these positions are now getting. thought he would be ahead of guys like cano and carpender though. (since its strictly for long term/dynasty rankings).
