Jake Guentzel in Prime Position

February 7, 2018 at 10:34 am

Patric Hörnqvist is currently out week-to-week with a lower body injury. This opens a spot on the Pegnuins top power play unit and 1st line. Reports suggest it will fall between Guentzel and Bryan Rust.

Hornqvist has been benefiting playing alongside on the PP with the all-star cast of Kessell, Crosby, and Malkin around him. Who could benefit from that surrounding cast?

Many expected (myself included) that Guentzel would take a big leap in his 3rd season in the NHL. However; he has played majority of the season on the 3rd line, and only 10 PPP on the season. When you play for a loaded team like the Penguins sometimes there are too many mouths to feed.

However; now he is expected to get top 6 playing time, and more TOI for the PP. Previously, he was only averaging 16min TOI on the bottom half, now he will be replacing a guy getting 17+min TOI in the top 6. Big shift.

He has the natural talent to produce. Now he is getting the opportunity to do what many of us thought he would all season long. This is a nice short term replacement for the foreseeable future. He’s only owned in 59% of leagues, and don’t let that 3rd line plus minus scare you.

Keep in mind his S% has dropped from 19% to 13 this year. Big facter to why his numbers are the way they are.

picking him up right now is just as good as trading for a guy at the deadline. won’t be dissapointed.
