2 Key Reasons Rafael Devers is the Real Deal

January 30, 2018 at 8:44 am

It’s no secret in the baseball community that Rafael Devers is a top prospect to follow. Similar to last year when most eyes were on his (now) teammate Benintendi, the focus has now shifted to the 21-year-old.

Last year we got a small taste of what this kid can bring, which is why so many people (myself included) will be heavily targeting him in all my leagues. Here are two key reasons why:

1) Small sample size in 2017 suggests big things for 218

Last season Devers only played in 58 games. However; this is a large enough sample size. In that time, he had 10 HR, 30 RBI, and 34 R. How does this translate in a 162-game slate? 28 HR, 84 RBI, and 95 R. Not bad for a kid who is barely legal drinking age. Not bad for anybody. Now, put him in that Red Sox lineup where he is projected to bat 6 right behind the power 3-4-5 of Bogaerts, Ramirez, and Moreland and we should see plenty of RISP AB’s. This is a 100% stacked line up, so as things shuffle throughout the year he should be fine.

2) Faith in Red Sox’ management should translate to fantasy owners

Last year at the trade deadline many expected the ‘Sox to go and acquire a 3B. Instead, they brought up the then 20-year-old to make his major league debut. Boy did he deliver. They were in the middle of a divisional race, and rather than trading a prospect they invested in their own. Sometimes when we analyze fantasy sleepers or rookies one of the biggest concerns will be the number of starts, at-bats, or quality at-bats he will receive based on batting order, surrounding lineup, etc. Many of those risks are at ease and minimized when it comes to Devers.

He is currently ranked overall in the #125-140 range, and low #20s among 3B. The consensus is that he should not be drafted as your starting 3B heading into the season, however; he should be one of the first names off the board once you begin to fill your utility and bench spots. He should/is expected to make a run as a top sleeper this year and may be in your starting lineup sooner than you think in 2018.

Don’t miss out on this kid.

He’ll be reached for in most leagues. Really just comes down to “When is it too early?”
